Business loans Glasgow: funds, figures and lenders for Glasgow firms
Business loans in Glasgow are priced like loans anywhere in the UK, but they are secured under Scots law and some lenders on any panel do not lend in Scotland at all. This page sets out what is specific to Glasgow: the local business figures, the public funding open to you and which lenders on our panel cover your postcode.
“A very professional and results-oriented approach to funding.”

Glasgow's business base in numbers
ONS UK Business Counts put the number of enterprises in Glasgow City at 20,585 in 2026 (Nomis labour market profile: Glasgow City). 17,565 of them (85.3%) employ fewer than ten people, 2,440 employ 10 to 49, 455 employ 50 to 249 and 130 employ 250 or more. That is 11.7% of the 176,000 enterprises in Scotland. Counting branches, shops and depots separately, the area has 26,595 local business units.
Measured by employee jobs (2024), the largest parts of the Glasgow economy are health and social care (14.9%), wholesale, retail and motor trades (10.4%), professional, scientific and technical services (10.4%) and administrative and support services (9.5%). The sectors that are bigger here than nationally are finance and insurance (6.1%, 1.8 times the Great Britain share of 3.4%), public administration (7.9%, 1.6 times the Great Britain share of 4.9%) and real estate (2.3% against 1.9% across Great Britain). In total the area has 442,000 employee jobs and 654,330 residents (2025).
Small business loans in Glasgow: what the figures mean
- With 85.3% of Glasgow enterprises employing fewer than ten people, a typical application is judged on two or three years of accounts, bank statements and the directors' credit files rather than a long trading record.
- Finance and insurance: 6.1%, 1.8 times the Great Britain share of 3.4%. Finance and insurance employers are a large share of jobs, which feeds a deep supply chain of advisers, IT and property firms that borrow to grow.
- Public administration: 7.9%, 1.6 times the Great Britain share of 4.9%. Public administration is a large employer here, and firms that supply councils and public bodies often wait 30 days or more for payment, so working capital matters.
How does Glasgow compare with its neighbours? Glasgow City has 20,585 enterprises for 654,330 residents, or 31.5 per 1,000 (our calculation from the ONS figures). Edinburgh has 18,635 enterprises, 35.1 per 1,000 residents, with 85.8% employing under ten; Newcastle has 9,090 enterprises, 28.3 per 1,000 residents, with 85.0% employing under ten. Professional, support, digital and finance jobs together are 30.5% of the Glasgow total, against 31.2% in Edinburgh and 21.5% in Newcastle.

Unsecured business loans in Glasgow

Business Enterprise Fund, for one, does not offer its Momentum Loan in Scottish postcodes. Unsecured means no charge over property, but 102 of the 109 products open to Glasgow require a personal guarantee in our panel data.

Business loans under Scots law
Borrowing in Glasgow runs on Scots law, and that changes the paperwork more than the price. A Scottish company often grants a bond and floating charge over its whole business, while any security over land or buildings is a separate standard security. Scots law does not recognise English-style automatic crystallisation, and the LPA receivers English lenders use do not exist in Scotland (Brodies LLP in The Gazette). Floating charges are still registered at Companies House within 21 days, as in England (GOV.UK), while new standard securities go on the Land Register kept by Registers of Scotland.
In practice that means a lender needs Scottish solicitors and Scottish security documents, and a minority of lenders do not lend north of the border at all, which is why we check lender appetite before a Glasgow application goes out.
The British Business Bank's Investment Fund for Scotland (£150 million) covers Glasgow and is open for applications. It offers smaller loans of £25,000 to £100,000, debt finance of £100,000 to £2 million and equity of up to £5 million.
Lenders on our panel that cover Glasgow
Lenders on our panel whose criteria name Scotland include Allica Bank, which lends to limited companies and LLPs in England, Scotland and Wales, LendingCrowd, which is based in Edinburgh and lends in England, Scotland and Wales and Nucleus Commercial Finance, which lends in Scotland up to £250,000.
Others do not lend to businesses based in G postcodes, so we leave them out of a Glasgow search: Finsec, Kingsway Finance, Adelpha Capital, Nationwide Finance, Asset Advantage, Kingsley Asset Finance, Cubefunder, Reparo Finance and Business Enterprise Fund.
That leaves 61 of 70 business loan providers open to Glasgow.
