Where asset finance fits the Glasgow economy
11.3% of employee jobs (2024) in Glasgow City sit in the equipment-heavy sectors: manufacturing (4.5%), construction (4.3%) and transport and storage (2.5%). Great Britain: 17.3% (Nomis labour market profile: Glasgow City).
| Sector | Glasgow share | Glasgow jobs | Great Britain | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | 4.5% | about 19,900 | 7.3% | 0.62 |
| Construction | 4.3% | about 19,000 | 5.0% | 0.86 |
| Transport and storage | 2.5% | about 11,000 | 5.0% | 0.50 |
The ratio is highest for construction, at 0.86. Construction firms finance plant, excavators and vans, often refinancing owned kit to release cash; see construction finance.
Against its nearest neighbours in our data, those sectors are 11.3% of Glasgow jobs, compared with 9.0% in Edinburgh and 10.0% in Newcastle.
Asset finance and Scots law
Hire purchase and leasing work in Glasgow much as they do in England, because the finance company owns the asset until the agreement ends. What is new is the Register of Statutory Pledges, opened on 1 April 2025 under the Moveable Transactions (Scotland) Act 2023. It lets a lender take security over physical moveable property while the business keeps using it (Registers of Scotland). Scots law has fewer asset types than English law over which fixed security can be taken, so floating charges were sometimes the only option (The Gazette). For a business raising money against kit it already owns, the statutory pledge can give lenders a fixed security route that did not exist before.

Before committing to new equipment, Business Gateway can tell you whether any grant or local programme covers part of the cost, which reduces what you need to finance.

In Glasgow City, manufacturing and construction together account for 8.8% of employee jobs (Nomis labour market profile: Glasgow City), and 91 products from 34 lenders on our panel fund plant or machinery for a Glasgow business. 29 of them are refinance products, which raise cash against kit the business already owns; see machinery finance for how lenders value used equipment.

Searches for van finance in Glasgow are mostly from businesses replacing or adding vehicles, and 93 vehicle finance products from 34 lenders on our panel are open to Glasgow businesses, including Admiral Leasing and Loans, Eastern Credit, Lloyds Bank Asset Finance, Paragon Bank Asset Finance and Armada Asset Finance. 29 of those products refinance a van the business already owns, releasing cash against it. More on how lenders treat commercial vehicles is on our van finance page.
