Business loans Belfast: funds, figures and lenders for Belfast firms

Business loans in Belfast work under Northern Ireland law, and many UK lenders exclude BT postcodes, so finding the lenders that will actually look at a Belfast business is half the job. Here is what a Belfast business should know before it applies, with every figure linked to where it comes from.

Small business loans in Belfast: the business base

NISRA's Inter-Departmental Business Register counted 12,100 VAT or PAYE registered businesses in Belfast in March 2026, 14.6% of the 82,680 in Northern Ireland (NISRA via the Department for the Economy). Belfast also added the most businesses over the year: 285, a rise of 2.4%. Across Northern Ireland, 89.4% of businesses are micro businesses with fewer than ten employees.

Unsecured business loans in Belfast

Of the 45 lenders on our panel with an unsecured business loan, 34 lend to a BT postcode; 11 do not, because they exclude BT or lend only in other areas. Unsecured means no charge over property, but 99 of the 106 products open to Belfast require a personal guarantee in our panel data.

Borrowing in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has its own British Business Bank fund. The Investment Fund for Northern Ireland commits around £100 million and offers debt finance of £25,000 to £2 million and equity of up to £5 million; unlike the funds in Great Britain it has no separate smaller loans tier. Invest NI is the economic development agency, and its funding section lists programmes such as a small business loan fund.

Two practical differences for a Belfast borrower. Property security sits on the Northern Ireland Land Registry, where each folio records mortgages (Department of Finance), so lenders need Northern Ireland solicitors. And Stamp Duty Land Tax applies in Northern Ireland as it does in England (GOV.UK), unlike Scotland and Wales.

Lenders on our panel that cover Belfast

Lenders on our panel whose criteria name Northern Ireland include Mercantile Trust, which has a Northern Ireland version of its secured business loan.

Others do not lend to businesses based in BT postcodes, so we leave them out of a Belfast search: LendingCrowd, Finsec, Credit4, Adelpha Capital, Multifi, Westwood Capital, Siemens Financial Services, Nationwide Finance, Kingsway Finance, Asset Advantage, Allica Bank, Alternative Bridging Corp, Kingsley Asset Finance, Cubefunder, Commercial Acceptances, Charles Street Finance, Reward Funding and Evolve Lending.

That leaves 52 of 70 business loan providers open to Belfast.

Free business support in Belfast

For free advice before you borrow, Invest Northern Ireland is the place to start: Northern Ireland's economic development agency, with a funding section for businesses. It cannot lend to you, but it can point you to grants and local programmes that sit alongside finance.

FAQs

Common questions

Do all lenders offer business loans to Belfast businesses?

No. 18 of the 70 business loan providers in our panel data exclude BT postcodes, so a direct application to one of them would be declined on location alone. We only approach lenders that lend at your postcode.

How many businesses are there in Belfast?

NISRA's Inter-Departmental Business Register counted 12,100 VAT or PAYE registered businesses in Belfast in March 2026, 14.6% of Northern Ireland's 82,680, and 285 more than a year earlier.

Do you have an office in Belfast?

No. Smart Funding Solutions is based in Chester and works with Belfast businesses by phone, video and email; lenders do not need you to be local to us.
