Nucleus Commercial Finance is a London-based non-bank lender known for unsecured business loans with fast, technology-led decisions, and for having products for businesses that fall outside its own standard criteria. Nucleus is one of the lenders on our panel. As an independent broker, we can set a Nucleus offer alongside other unsecured lenders so you can see how it compares. You can read more on Nucleus Commercial Finance's own website.

About Nucleus Commercial Finance

Nucleus is a founder-led business that has been lending to UK SMEs since the early 2010s. Trade press coverage describes a business built around automated underwriting using open banking and open accounting data, with the company saying in 2023 that 96 per cent of its decisions were made in under a minute. In November 2023 it announced a £200m funding facility from NatWest to support its lending, and said it served more than 2,000 UK businesses.

Today Nucleus is based at Regent Street in London and works mainly through a network of introducers and partners rather than direct to the public. Companies House shows that the company now trading as Nucleus Commercial Finance Limited took that name in October 2024.

Smart Funding Solutions is an independent broker and is not part of Nucleus Commercial Finance.

What Nucleus Commercial Finance funds

Nucleus currently describes three core products, each aimed at a different type of borrower. All are unsecured.

ProductWhat it is forTypical sizeTypical term
Nucleus Business LoanGrowth, working capital or investment for established SMEs, repaid monthly£10,000 to £500,000Up to 60 months
EnableFlexible funding for businesses that do not meet the Business Loan criteria£10,000 to £350,000Up to 48 months
Credit BuilderSmaller, short-term funding repaid weekly£3,000 to £25,000Up to 12 months

The main Business Loan is a conventional unsecured business loan: a lump sum repaid in fixed monthly instalments. Enable is designed for higher-risk applicants, so expect a higher cost than the standard loan. Credit Builder uses weekly repayments over a short term and, according to Nucleus, is flexible about directors' history, which can make it a stepping stone for a business rebuilding its record.

Who Nucleus Commercial Finance suits (and who it may not)

Nucleus is a sensible lender to consider if you run an established limited company and want:

  • an unsecured loan of anywhere from £10,000 to around £500,000
  • a fast decision without offering property as security
  • a lender that has alternative products if you just miss its main criteria
  • a small, short facility to build a borrowing track record

Because every product is unsecured, directors are asked for a personal guarantee, so it is less suitable if you are unwilling to give one. Our guide to business loans without a personal guarantee explains the limited alternatives. It is also not designed for start-ups; its products are aimed at businesses with a trading record.

If your credit history is the main obstacle, compare Enable and Credit Builder with the options in our guide to bad credit business loans before deciding.

What Nucleus Commercial Finance looks at

Nucleus relies heavily on data. Its decisions draw on open banking, which gives a read-only view of your business bank account, and open accounting, which links to your accounting software. Lenders of this type typically look at:

  • business bank transactions over recent months
  • turnover, profitability and how consistent income is
  • existing borrowing and repayment commitments
  • the credit history of the business and its directors
  • how long the business has been trading

Having your accounting software up to date and connecting your bank account when asked can speed things up considerably. You can model repayments in advance with our business loan calculator.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Unsecured loans up to £500,000 without property security.
  • Fast, data-driven decisions.
  • Three products, so a near miss on the main loan is not always a dead end.
  • Credit Builder gives smaller businesses a way to establish a track record.

Cons

  • Personal guarantees are required.
  • Enable and Credit Builder are priced for higher risk.
  • Weekly repayments on Credit Builder can strain cash flow.
  • Mainly available through brokers and partners rather than direct.

Applying through a broker vs going direct

Nucleus works largely through introducers, so for many businesses a broker is the natural route in. More importantly, comparing first tells you whether Nucleus is the right lender at all. For a strong, established company, another lender may offer a longer term or a lower overall cost; for a business with a patchy record, a specialist product might be the only realistic option.

We search the market across more than 300 lenders, present your case properly and approach the ones most likely to approve it, with one application from you. It is free to enquire; any broker fee is disclosed separately before you proceed. You can compare lenders in minutes with our Instant Quotes tool.

Alternatives to Nucleus Commercial Finance

  • Fleximize: a good comparison for unsecured loans if you want features such as repayment holidays.
  • iwoca: better suited to smaller, flexible borrowing that you draw and repay as needed.
  • Swishfund: worth comparing for fast unsecured funding for smaller SMEs.

This guide is general information, not financial advice. Lenders set their own criteria, rates and terms, and all finance is subject to status.

Nucleus's main Business Loan ranges from £10,000 to £500,000 over up to 60 months. Its Enable product goes up to £350,000 and its Credit Builder loan from £3,000 to £25,000. The amount offered depends on your trading figures and credit profile.

Are Nucleus loans secured?

Nucleus describes its current products as unsecured, so you do not need to offer property. Directors are asked for a personal guarantee, which means they can be personally liable if the business cannot repay.

What is the Nucleus Enable loan?

Enable is Nucleus's flexible funding product for businesses that do not meet the criteria for its standard Business Loan. It offers £10,000 to £350,000 over up to 48 months and is priced for the higher risk.

Can I apply to Nucleus directly?

Nucleus works mainly through introducers and partners. A broker can submit your application and, just as usefully, compare Nucleus with other unsecured lenders that might suit you better.
