Adult social care workforce, 2026: vacancies fall to a decade low but growth slows
Vacancies in adult social care in England fell to around 96,000, their lowest level in a decade, according to the Skills for…
UK venture funds raised a record $6.9bn in Q3 2026, but early-stage startups got just $740m. What it means for tech firms and their debt funding options.
This article is for founders and finance directors of software, IT and tech businesses who want to know what the latest venture capital figures mean for them. The headline numbers are strong, but most of the money is going to a small number of larger companies. Below we set out the figures and the funding options for tech businesses that want to grow without, or alongside, equity. Smart Funding Solutions is a broker, not a lender: we compare whole-of-market options across 300+ lenders, arranging funding from £10,000 to £20 million.
As Disruption Banking reported on 13 October 2026, analysis by HSBC Innovation Banking UK and Dealroom found:
Emily Turner, chief executive of HSBC Innovation Banking UK, said: "The record level of venture fundraising this quarter is an encouraging signal for the UK innovation ecosystem."
The new funds should mean more money to invest in the years ahead. But for now, investment is concentrated in later-stage companies. With early-stage businesses receiving $740 million between them, most smaller tech firms will not raise venture capital this year, and many do not want to. Selling shares means giving up ownership and some control, and equity is usually the most expensive money a growing business can raise if it succeeds.
For a software or IT services business with steady revenue, debt can be a sensible alternative or addition to equity. Lenders increasingly look at recurring revenue, contracted income and R&D tax credit claims rather than property or personal assets. Borrowing can fund hiring, product development or marketing while founders keep their shares, or extend the runway before an equity round so it is raised on better terms.
Debt is not right for every business: very early companies without revenue usually need equity or grants first, and borrowing must be repaid whether growth arrives or not. The cost of borrowing matters too. See our article on what the Bank Rate decision means for business borrowing.
Our software company funding page explains how lenders view software businesses, and there are pages for IT services firms and technology and media businesses. Our guide to technology business loans covers the options in more depth.
Lenders to software and tech businesses look at the quality of your revenue: how much is recurring, how long customers stay, how fast revenue is growing and your gross margin. For R&D tax credit loans, they look at your previous claims and who prepares them. Many will connect to your accounting and billing systems to see the figures directly. A clear plan for what the money will achieve, such as hires or a product launch, and how it will be repaid, makes an application stronger. On the equity side, the record quarter was helped by a few very large raises: Chief Investment Officer reported that Index Ventures raised $3.5 billion, about half of the quarter's total.
