This article is for business owners who have seen coverage of the NACFB Commercial Lender Awards 2026 and want to know what it means for them as a borrower. The National Association of Commercial Finance Brokers (NACFB) announced its shortlist in mid-October, and the awards offer a snapshot of the lenders competing for commercial finance business in the UK. Smart Funding Solutions is an independent broker, not a lender, and has no involvement in these awards. We search the whole market across 300+ lenders to arrange funding from £10,000 to £20 million.

The key dates

  • 12 October 2026: the NACFB published the shortlist (see the NACFB announcement), with trade press coverage following on 13 October.
  • Record entries: 497 entries across 25 categories, from the NACFB's Patron lenders and Partner suppliers.
  • 5pm on 20 October 2026: voting by NACFB member brokers closes.
  • 26 November 2026: winners and highly commended entries are revealed at an awards ceremony at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, London.

According to the NACFB and The Intermediary, winners are decided by a combination of judges' assessments and votes from NACFB member brokers.

The award categories

Most of the 25 categories recognise a type of lender. The lending categories are:

  • Asset Finance and Leasing Lender of the Year
  • Bridging Finance Lender of the Year
  • Business Bank of the Year
  • Business Loan Lender of the Year
  • Buy-to-Let Mortgage Lender of the Year
  • Commercial Mortgage Lender of the Year
  • Community Lender of the Year
  • Development Finance Lender of the Year
  • Emerging Lender of the Year
  • Invoice Finance Lender of the Year
  • Short-term Finance Lender of the Year
  • Specialist Lender of the Year

The rest recognise teams and people, such as BDM Team of the Year, Underwriting Team of the Year, Service Excellence, Rising Star and Sustainability Champion, plus industry supplier and leadership awards. Every shortlisted lender is also entered for the overall NACFB Commercial Lender of the Year.

What the categories say about where lenders are active

The spread of categories is a reminder of how varied UK commercial lending is. A business looking for finance is not choosing between a handful of high street banks; it is choosing from many specialist markets, each with its own lenders:

Categories for emerging, specialist and community lenders also show that newer and niche lenders are a growing part of the market. Some will consider businesses that a mainstream bank would turn down, or lend for purposes a bank will not.

What an award does and does not tell you

An award shortlist tells you a lender is active and well regarded in its field. It does not tell you whether that lender is right for your business. Lenders set their own criteria on trading history, turnover, sector, security and loan size, and a lender that is excellent for one business may not lend to another at all.

The right lender for you is the one whose criteria fit your figures and whose terms work for your plans, on the total amount you repay. That is a question of matching, not reputation. Our guide to how lenders assess business loan applications explains what they look at, and you can browse the lenders we work with on our lenders pages.

Questions to ask any lender

Whether a lender is shortlisted for an award or not, the same questions tell you whether an offer is right for your business:

  1. What is the total amount I will repay, including every fee?
  2. Is the loan secured, and is a personal guarantee required?
  3. Can I repay early, and what would that cost?
  4. How long will it take to reach a decision and release the funds once you have everything you need?
  5. What happens if my trading dips during the term?

Comparing the answers from several lenders side by side is the surest way to spot the offer that fits. Before you share details with any firm, you can check it on the FCA Register.

Why a broker who knows the market matters

With so many lenders across so many specialist markets, knowing which ones are active, what they are currently looking for and how to present a case to them is most of the work. Lender appetite changes over time, so the lender that suited a business last year may not be the best fit now.

A broker who knows the market can approach suitable lenders directly, explain your business in the terms each underwriter needs and compare offers side by side. That saves you applying to lenders one at a time and leaving several credit searches on your file. Our guide on why to use a business loan adviser covers this in more detail, and our case studies show the kinds of deals we have arranged.

Find the lenders that fit your business

Whoever wins on 26 November, what matters for your business is which lenders fit your needs today. Tell us how much you need and what it is for, and Instant Quotes shows your lender matches instantly, with no credit check and no obligation. A broker then searches the wider market and approaches suitable lenders for you. Lenders make every decision, and all finance is subject to status.

This guide is general information, not financial advice. Lenders set their own criteria, rates and terms, and all finance is subject to status.
