About regional business funds in Wales
Specialist knowledge. Better outcomes.
Welsh businesses can borrow from the same banks, specialist lenders and online funders as anywhere else in the UK, plus regional and community funds that are only open to businesses in Wales. This page focuses on those regional funds and how they compare with national lenders. Smart Funding Solutions is a broker based in Chester, close to the border with North Wales, and we compare a panel of 300+ lenders for Welsh clients. This page compares the regional and government-backed funds. For every type of finance open to Welsh businesses, from asset and invoice finance to Business Wales support, see our guide to business loans in Wales.
FW Capital, part of the Development Bank of Wales Group, manages the £30 million IFW FW Capital Debt Finance fund. Its Wales fund page sets out loans of £100,000 to £2 million over one to five years for growth capital, hiring, new markets, product development, equipment, premises and the move to net zero. The terms we hold ask for around three years of trading, a personal guarantee, and a growth purpose rather than refinancing. Businesses outside Wales can apply if they will have a material presence in Wales as a result.
BCRS Business Loans is a not-for-profit community lender working in the West Midlands and Wales. Its website sets out loans from £10,000 to £250,000, with no early repayment charges. It is aimed at viable businesses that cannot get the bank funding they need, takes a relationship approach to lending, and normally asks for personal guarantees and a debenture.
Accredited lenders offer Growth Guarantee Scheme loans across the UK, including Wales, and some GGS lenders on our panel lend only in England and Wales.
Regional funds lend only within their own area, and lenders check the trading address. The Investment Fund for Wales terms we hold cover CF, SA, NP, LL and LD postcodes, and parts of the SY and CH areas that fall in Wales, such as Deeside and Welshpool. Border businesses with an English postcode may instead fall within a West Midlands or North West fund; our guides to the Midlands and the North West cover those.
