About business loans in the South West
Specialist knowledge. Better outcomes.
It is which lender is right for the amount, the timing and the shape of the business. The South West now has its own government-backed fund alongside full access to the national lending market. This guide explains both. Smart Funding Solutions is a broker based in Chester that compares a panel of 300+ lenders for businesses throughout the UK, including the South West.
FW Capital, a lender on our panel, manages the £26 million SWIF FW Capital Debt Finance fund. Its South West fund page sets out loans of £100,000 to £2 million over one to five years. The terms we hold for this fund are:
National lenders treat a South West postcode exactly as they would one anywhere else, and they cover needs a regional fund does not:
Seasonal businesses in the region, such as caravan parks and coastal hospitality, often need finance shaped around a short summer season rather than a standard monthly loan.

The South West Investment Fund (SWIF) is a £200 million fund from the British Business Bank, and was the first of its new Nations and Regions Investment Funds. It covers the whole South West: Bristol, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.
| SWIF strand | Amount | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Smaller loans | £25,000 to £100,000 | Smaller growth projects and younger businesses |
| Debt finance | £100,000 to £2 million | Established businesses with a clear growth plan |
| Equity finance | Up to £5 million | Businesses selling a share in return for investment |
The fund is delivered through appointed fund managers. Smart Funding Solutions arranges debt, not equity, so this page concentrates on the loan strands.
We work remotely with South West businesses; we do not have a local office. Tell us what you need and we will search the market across national and regional lenders, show you which are realistic and prepare the case properly. If the South West Investment Fund is the strongest option, we will say so and explain what it will want to see.
It is free to enquire; any broker fee is disclosed separately before you proceed. Use our Instant Quotes tool to compare lenders in minutes, or see how the South West compares with other areas in our guide to regional business loans.
It is a £200 million British Business Bank fund for smaller businesses across the South West of England. It offers smaller loans of £25,000 to £100,000, debt finance of £100,000 to £2 million and equity of up to £5 million, through appointed fund managers.
Yes. The British Business Bank lists Bristol, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire within the fund's area.
The debt finance strand managed by FW Capital asks for three years of annual accounts, so it suits established businesses. Younger businesses may find the smaller loans strand, or a start-up loan, a better fit.
Generally not. Refinancing is not among the uses FW Capital lists for its SWIF loans, which are aimed at growth. If you want to replace existing borrowing, a mainstream lender is usually the better route; see refinancing business loans.
Usually, yes. Personal guarantees from directors are normally part of a regional fund loan of this size, alongside other security depending on the deal.
