Creative Growth Finance review: growth loans for UK creative businesses

Creative Growth Finance from Creative UK explained: growth loans for film, TV, games, music and design firms, who qualifies, what it asks for and alternatives.

Creative Growth Finance is a specialist debt fund for the UK's creative industries, run by Creative UK in partnership with Triodos Bank. It exists because creative companies often struggle with mainstream lenders: their value sits in intellectual property, talent and pipelines of projects rather than in buildings or machinery. Creative Growth Finance is one of the lenders on our panel, and as an independent broker we can compare it with other growth and sector lenders so you can see where your business fits best. You can read more on Creative Growth Finance's own website.

About Creative Growth Finance

Creative UK supports and invests in the UK's creative industries. Its predecessor organisation, Creative England, launched the first Creative Growth Finance fund with Triodos Bank in 2019. According to Creative UK, that first fund invested more than £17 million across over 30 creative businesses.

A second fund, Creative Growth Finance II, followed with £35 million to lend, again in partnership with Triodos Bank. It lends to small and medium-sized creative companies across the UK, not just in London, and pairs the money with the wider support and networks Creative UK offers the sector.

Smart Funding Solutions is an independent broker and is not part of Creative UK, Creative Growth Finance or Triodos Bank.

What Creative Growth Finance funds

Creative Growth Finance offers term loans for growth. On its published criteria:

FeatureWhat Creative UK says
Loan size£100,000 to £1,000,000
TermUp to 5 years, with monthly repayments
SecurityA first-priority debenture over company assets; partial personal guarantees may be asked for
Eligible sectorsFilm, TV and media, immersive and video games, advertising and marketing, digital and creative tech, creative software, fashion, architecture, music and publishing
Who can applyUK incorporated SMEs that pass eligibility, due diligence and affordability checks

The fund is aimed at growth: hiring, developing new IP, taking on bigger productions or contracts, expanding into new markets or building out technology. Coverage of the second fund highlighted film and TV, virtual production, narrative-led video games, advertising and software among its target areas.

A debenture gives the lender a charge over the company's assets, so it is worth understanding how that affects any other borrowing you have or plan.

Who Creative Growth Finance suits (and who it may not)

Creative UK sets these minimum requirements:

  • At least two years of trading.
  • At least £300,000 in annual revenue.
  • At least one year of accounts filed at Companies House.
  • Operating in one of the eligible creative sectors.

It tends to suit:

  • Established games studios, production companies, agencies and creative tech firms with a track record and clear growth plans.
  • Businesses that own valuable IP and can show how new funding turns into revenue.
  • Founders who want growth capital without selling equity.

It may not suit:

  • Start-ups or businesses below the revenue threshold.
  • Companies that need money within days, since the process takes weeks.
  • Businesses wanting less than £100,000, where smaller lenders or facilities may be a better route.
  • Firms outside the creative sectors listed.

What Creative Growth Finance looks at

Creative UK publishes a clear process. You complete an eligibility checker, have a call with an investment manager and submit an expression of interest, which it aims to review within three to five working days. A full application and due diligence follows, which it says takes around six to eight weeks to reach a term sheet, with contracts and drawdown within about four weeks after that.

Documents it asks for include:

  • Two years of monthly financial forecasts.
  • Up-to-date management accounts.
  • Filed company accounts.
  • An IP and asset register.
  • A capitalisation table showing who owns the company.

A realistic, well-explained forecast matters a great deal here. Lenders want to see how the loan funds growth and how that growth pays the loan back.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Built for creative and IP-led businesses that banks often find hard to assess.
  • Meaningful loan sizes, up to £1 million.
  • Terms of up to five years spread repayments over a growth plan.
  • Non-dilutive: you keep your equity.
  • Comes with access to Creative UK's wider sector support.

Cons

  • Minimum trading, revenue and accounts requirements rule out early-stage firms.
  • The process takes weeks, not days.
  • A debenture and possibly a partial personal guarantee are required.
  • Limited to eligible creative sectors.

Applying through a broker vs going direct

You can apply to Creative Growth Finance directly through Creative UK. The reason to compare first is that creative companies often have more options than they think: some lenders fund against contracts, receivables or tax credits, while others offer growth finance on terms that may sit alongside or replace a sector fund.

We search the market across our panel of 300+ lenders, help you present forecasts and IP in a way lenders understand, and approach those most likely to fund your plan. It is free to enquire; any broker fee is disclosed separately before you proceed. Start with our Instant Quotes tool to compare lenders in minutes.

Alternatives to Creative Growth Finance

  • ThinCats: a growth lender for established SMEs, worth comparing if your business is profitable but outside the eligible creative sectors.
  • OakNorth Bank: lends to growing companies and can suit creative businesses with strong financials looking for larger facilities.
  • Praetura: may suit companies that can offer equipment or other business assets as security.

This guide is general information, not financial advice. Lenders set their own criteria, rates and terms, and all finance is subject to status.

FAQs

Common questions

How much can Creative Growth Finance lend?

Creative UK says loans range from £100,000 to £1,000,000, repaid monthly over up to five years. The amount depends on your revenue, forecasts and affordability.

Which sectors does Creative Growth Finance cover?

Eligible sectors include film, TV and media, immersive and video games, advertising and marketing, digital and creative tech, creative software, fashion, architecture, music and publishing. If your business falls outside these, we can compare growth lenders across our wider panel.

Do I need to give a personal guarantee?

Creative UK says loans are secured with a first-priority debenture over company assets and that partial personal guarantees may be required. Ask for full details of any guarantee before you agree to it, and take independent advice if you are unsure.

How long does a Creative Growth Finance application take?

Creative UK aims to review an expression of interest in three to five working days. Full due diligence to a term sheet takes around six to eight weeks, with contracts and drawdown within about four weeks after that. If you need money sooner, a faster facility may help bridge the gap.

Can a start-up creative business apply?

Not usually. Creative UK asks for at least two years of trading, £300,000 or more in annual revenue and at least one year of filed accounts. Younger businesses may find grants or start-up business loans a better starting point.
